OVERVIEW

 

Enjoy an overnight trip to the back country of Santa Catalina Island. Ron Vanderhoff is our chapter lead for this adventure and our hosts are Kevin Alison and the Catalina Island Conservancy. While on Catalina, we will be transported throughout the island on Conservancy vehicles and hosted by their expert staff, with various stops to see, explore, and understand the native flora. This will be a great trip and will fill quickly. More information about the Catalina Island Conservancy can be found at https://www.catalinaconservancy.org.

 

LOGISTICS

 

COST

  1. Donation: This trip requires a $50 CASH donation (or $25 for environmental science students and low-income members). The $50 cash donation will be collected when we arrive and assemble in Avalon. These funds will become an unrestricted donation from OCCNPS to the Catalina Island Conservancy.
  2. Boat Transportation: Participants must also purchase their own boat tickets – see BOAT TRAVEL below.

 

REGISTRATION

  1. Limited Openings: This trip is strictly limited to the first 15 CNPS members only.
  2. Students and low income members will be asked to verify their status to fieldtrips@OCCNPS.org within seven days of registration.

  3. Registration: Begins promptly at 5:00 PM on Monday April 7 on our Eventbrite registration page HERE.

  4. Waiver/Liability Forms: See the Eventbrite registration page above for the CNPS and Catalina Island Conservancy waiver forms.

 

BOAT TRAVEL

  1. Tickets: Boat tickets are the responsibility of the participants and should be purchased early on the Catalina Flyer at https://catalinainfo.com/.

  2. Departure: We will depart Newport Beach early on the morning of Saturday April 26 on the 9:00 AM Catalina Flyer boat (arriving Avalon at 10:30 AM).
  3. Return: On the 4:30 PM boat on Sunday April 27 (arriving at Newport Beach at 6 PM).

 

OVERNIGHT ACCOMMODATIONS

  1. Location: The Conservancy’s Laura Stein Volunteer Camp, a couple of miles NW of Avalon.
  2. Accommodations are rustic, but comfortable and include: Water, outlets, toilets, cot beds, and shared cabins.
  3. Bring: Sleeping bag/bedding, all food, water, sunscreen, hat, hiking/trail shoes, camera, and all supplies for a day out of hiking and travel.
