Applicant Garden Criteria & Qualities

Garden Characteristics:

• Native Plant Focus: The garden should feature a “large percentage” of native plants, particularly those local to the Orange County area. The garden doesn’t need to be 100% native but should showcase native garden possibilities.
• Accessibility: Applicants should have clear paths and walkways for visitors to navigate safely. The garden should be accessible and manageable for all ages.
• Aesthetic Appeal: The garden should have a balance of unity and variety with some design elements. These could include:
  • Evergreen backbone: Plants that provide structure and color year-round.
  • Seasonal blooms: A variety of plants that ensure something is in bloom during the tour/event season.
  • Hardscape features: Patios, benches, or other non-plant elements that create gathering spaces.
  • Focal points or themes: A water feature, sculpture, or a clear theme like a hummingbird garden, pollinator habitat, or a serenity area.

Applicant & Host Qualities:

• Enthusiasm for Native Plants: The host should be an enthusiastic advocate for native plants and be willing to share their gardening journey.
• Willingness to Share: Applicants should be comfortable with visitors walking through their spaces and should be willing to a allow photos of their garden to be used for promotional purposes.
• Knowledgeable: The host should have some knowledge of the plants in their garden, including their species, and be willing to answer questions from visitors.
• Realistic Perspective: The garden doesn’t need to be perfect. The organization values gardens at any stage, including those with ongoing projects, as they provide great learning opportunities.
• Logistical Preparedness: Applicants should be able to provide information on parking options (street, driveway, etc.) and have some space for people to gather comfortably.
