Introducing the New and Improved Calscape

CalscapeDo you know about CNPS’s Calscape website? Whether you’re new to native plant gardening or a seasoned expert, chances are Calscape can help. Find tips and inspiration at www.calscape.org, a website where people can search for the best native plants for their location and needs.

With a beautiful new redesign and brand-new features, the newly launched Calscape is loaded with over 8,500 California native plants and cultivars to explore and choose from, along with gorgeous garden designs, tips for maintenance, a state-wide map of native plant nurseries, and a directory of credentialed landscaping professionals. All of these resources are provided free by the California Native Plant Society, the largest native plant organization in the country.

Calscape is designed to give everyone the tools they need for success with native plants. With Calscape.org, you can quickly  find the native plants local to our Yolo and Colusa county areas along with full-color plant photos, descriptions, and care guidelines. The robust search lets you filter by:

  • Plant type
  • Growing conditions
  • Plant size
  • Flower color and flowering season
  • Wildlife support
  • Nursery availability and more!

By  creating a free Calscape account, you can store your plant choices and Calscape garden designs, with the ability to download them for sharing or a shopping trip to your nearest nursery.  You can also discover which native plants host the butterflies and moths in your area.

As part of the update, Calscape now features a new garden planner and data layer that allows gardeners to design and find plants by plant community (habitats like desert, meadow, and chaparral); People who don’t have yards can now search local native plants that grow well in containers, so you can garden on your balcony or doorstep.

Here are five activities to try out on the new Calscape:

  • Find the right plants for your garden’s unique conditions with enhanced search capabilities.
  • Discover plants that will attract local pollinators and turn your garden into a wildlife haven.
  • Mimic your favorite habitat using recommended garden designs and plant lists.
  • Find patio friendly native plants for your container garden.
  • Find local nurseries that have the native plant inventory stock you’re looking for.
