Nov 8th – Willow Springs Tour & Californica Nursery Plant Sale

On Nov 8th at 10AM SCCNPS and Californica Nursery (Instagram) are hosting a native plant / natural history walk at Willow Springs Park in Long Beach.  We last visited Willow Springs in 2021, and it’s long overdue for another visit – It is a good example of a successful native plant restoration over many acres.  SCCNPS has provided Conze Grant funding for a mural featuring native plants at Willow Springs Park in 2022, so make sure to check out that out too!  Willow Springs is located at 2745 Orange Ave, Long Beach, CA 90806

The walk on Nov 8th is led by Larry Rich (head of Long Beach Dept. of Sustainability, which manages Willow Springs).  He’s a good story teller and has historic, geologic, and personal anecdotes that will liven up your morning.  We’ll finish the walk with SCCNPS tabling and Californica Nursery hosting their first Fall native plant sale.  We’re gratified to partner with Californica Nursery for this event.

We think this will be a relaxed way to talk about your garden questions, see garden-worthy native plants in-habitat, and pick up some plants of your own.  Fall is the best time to install your garden – the cooler weather lets plants set down their roots in order to get through the hot summer.  There’s a lot of focus outside the native plant community in Spring as the ideal time to plant, but us native plant folks know that Spring is actually the time to enjoy annual garden flowers that you’ve sown in Fall.  Speaking of seeds – SCCNPS will bring our supplies of seeds for the garden – there’s no charge, but a donation of your choosing is appreciated.
