Sep 9 2024 – Hybrid Meeting at DeForest Park 5:30 PM – 8:30

Mark your calendar for a meeting on Sep 9th! We’ll be in-person again (but also available on Zoom, if we can get the technical details right) at DeForest Park in N Long Beach (6255 De Forest Ave, Long Beach, CA 90805) where we will search for native plants and listen to a talk by Angel Garcia and Cris Sarabia who will present their talk, Native Plants for the Garden & Successful Design Elements

Arrive early – there’s extensive wetlands restoration and native plants installed at the park (about 35 acres according to the City of Long Beach), so early arrival will let you take it all in.  The talk will start at 7:00, just before sunset.

Bring your phone and download iNaturalist in order to play along with the challenge to find and document 30 species for Biodiversity Day!

We will attempt to start the Zoom call at 7:00 sharp, but give us a bit of grace to overcome unforeseen technical issues.

The meeting schedule is:

  • 5:30 – 7:00 informal meet and greet, intro to CNPS, 30×30, plant species scavenger hunt + walking tour of wetlands and park
  • 7:00 start of in-person meeting / start of Zoom meeting – Native Plants for the Garden & Successful Design Elements – (English and Spanish)
  • 7:07 sunset
  • 8:30 end meeting
Curious?  We’ll have experts to provide information on CNPS, The South Coast Chapter, Biodiversity Day, 30×30, iNaturalist, and the fun challenge to find and document 30 species.
Angel Garcia will present a briefing in English and Spanish on native plants for the garden and garden design principles.  The talk will specifically address plants that are more user-friendly as well as those that will be for sale at our Oct 5 plant sale as well as design basics, plant establishment and maintenance, and choosing the right plant. Cris Sarabia, also a contributor to the presentation, will help to field questions from anyone in the audience.
Angel is an interior designer by trade and a passionate garden designer with a nearly 100% native plant garden at his home.  Cris Sarabia is a legendary native plant community member with a lifetime of restoration and garden experience.
