July 1, 2024: Potluck at the Gardena Willows Wetland Preserve

Our July meeting will be in person, and starts at 6PM.

NEW NOTE: Karen writes to say, Please advise everyone to wear insect repellent!  The daytime mosquitoes were really bad when I was there for the June 15 workday. Apparently Vector Control is apparently having a hard time keeping on top of those pests, despite more rigorous control efforts in place.  I’ve never experienced this problem at the Willows before.

Join us on Monday, July 1 at 6 p.m. (early start time) for free pizza (please bring a salad, a side, or a dessert to share.  Please also bring whatever you would like to drink.).   SCCNPS will provide pizza, tableware, napkins, cups, and water.  We’ll have a walk through the demonstration garden known as Mother Nature’s Backyard and along the pathways of the Gardena Willows Wetland Preserve.

Please RSVP by email to SouthCoastCNPS@gmail.com so we have a head count and can provide enough pizza.

The Preserve covers 13.6 acres and is the remnant of a wetland area that once covered 400 acres.  Read more of the history here https://www.gardenawillows.org/history.htm

Gardena Willows Preserve is located at 1201 W. 170th Street, Gardena, CA 90247 and is best reached by driving into Arthur Johnson Park from 170th St.  Park your vehicle (if driving) on the south side of the lot and take the pathway along the chain link fence planted with native grape to the Willows entrance gate at the southeast corner of the park.  Once inside the wetlands, take trail junctions to the right to follow the shortest path to Mother Nature’s Backyard.  Find it HERE on Google Maps.

Mother Nature’s Backyard is a water-wise demonstration garden.

Please bring a side dish or dessert to share if you are able – it will be a real pot-luck since we aren’t per-coordinating this part of the meal.  If you’d like a drink other than water, please feel free to bring that.

A trail winds through the Willows bordered by Artemisia Douglasiana.

Willow duff coats the ground like snow at certain times of the year.
