Beautify Lunada Bay: 1 Nov, 2021
General Meeting – Nov 1, 2021
Beautify Lunada Bay’s Path to Success
The Lunada Bay Homeowners Association initiated the Beautify Lunada Bay (BLB) Project in 2014 to restore habitat and improve the appearance of public areas in the Lunada Bay community of Palos Verdes Estates. The design for Phase 1 of the BLB project was developed following several meetings with local residents and City officials beginning in 2014. The final design included replacing existing non-native weeds with drought tolerant native plants, a decomposed granite, stone lined trail and an outdoor classroom area on a one-acre site across from Lunada Bay Elementary School.
Plans for the BLB project were developed in collaboration with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy (PVPLC), a local nonprofit organization that grows native plants and restores open space on the Peninsula. The City of Palos Verdes Estates gave its enthusiastic support in 2017 with unanimous votes of approval from both the Parklands Committee and the City Council. The City also provided boulders and stones to line the paths, mulch, and water for three years.
Work on the Phase 1a project on the north side of Agua Amarga Canyon, just west of the intersection of Via Anacapa and Paseo Lunado, began in November 2017 and was completed in January 2018. Work on the second half-acre site Phase 1b, directly across for Lunada Bay Elementary School, began in April 2018 and was completed later that year.
Planning for the second phase of the project, BLB Phase 2, began in 2018 and were approved by the City and California’s Coastal Commission in December 2020. Work on Phase 2 is ongoing, with completion planned for late 2021 or early 2022.
The local chapter of the California Native Plant Society has been a strong supporter of both Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the BLB project. Bill Ailor, leader of the BLB effort will give an overview of the history and status of the project at our meeting on November 1, 2021.
The meeting starts at 7:30.
