Seed Collection at Santa Fe Dam 

Join us for a morning of seed collecting at Santa Fe Dam. In conjunction with LA Parks and Recreation, volunteers will be harvesting native seeds at the Santa Fe Dam Natural Area.  As we walk and talk, you’ll learn respectful collection practices, techniques for identifying and gathering the seeds of various plant families, and common tools and materials for field work. 

This event will take place over a short, low-intensity hike, but we may encounter uneven surfaces and slight inclines. Make sure to wear good hiking shoes, long sleeves, and pants. Please bring a large water bottle, sun protection (SPF and a hat), and a snack if you’d like it. Gloves are a good idea as well. All are welcome; seed collection experience is not required. 

The seed collection will be led by Nina Raj of the Altadena Seed Library. Nina is a CNPS Board Member, Certified CA Naturalist, UC Master Gardener, Certified Theodore Payne Foundation Native Landscaper, and Grow LA Gardens Trainee. 

Location: Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area, 15501 E. Arrow Highway, Baldwin Park/Irwindale, CA 91706. Note Google Maps can get this location wrong; the only park entrance is from Arrow Hwy. At the entry kiosk, mention that you are volunteering with the California Native Plant Society and the entry fee will be waived. 

Parking/Meeting Location: The Nature Center at Santa Fe Dam. From the entrance kiosk on top of the dam, drive down to the first intersection/stop sign and turn right. Continue and turn left at the first intersection, and left again at the next intersection. The road leads right into the Nature Center parking lot where we meet. Look for our signs to guide you.
