Santa Fe Dam Habitat Education, Bioblitz #3

Join us in a community science project to collect and record biodiversity data and support conservation in this increasingly rare habitat.

This is the third of our series of bioblitzes in the large natural habitat area of the Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area, L.A. County Park. The leaders are Cristhian Mace and Gabi McLean. We plan to survey the area and record all species of plants and other organisms to document the existing species and contribute to the preservation of these increasingly rare coastal sage scrub and alluvial scrub habitats, as well as riparian woodland and California junipers in the area. Various species occur here that are difficult to find and fairly unique in L.A. County, and support rare bird and herp species. Also noteworthy are several burned patches of land in various stages of fire recovery.

Special Note: We will make individual macro lenses with fill lights available to registered participants, for the duration of the bioblitz. Those lenses attach to individual smart phones and make macro photography – and detail plant identification – possible with your standard mobile phone. Come 15 minutes earlier if you want to borrow a macro lens for your smartphone.

Meet: 8:45 a.m. in the parking lot of the Nature Center at Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area (drive north once you pass the entrance kiosk, follow the signs).

Entrance Fee: The park entrance fee will be waived for this CNPS event. Please say that you are attending the California Native Plant Society event and the $12 /vehicle, or $5 for seniors (65 & over) fee will be waived.

Bring: For your safety and comfort, please wear outdoor-appropriate attire and footwear, and bring sun protection as well as water and snacks for yourself.

Preparation: Bring your smart phone fully charged and with the iNaturalist application installed as we will be using it to collect field observation data. To participate, please ensure that you create an iNaturalist account prior to arriving at Santa Fe Dam. New to iNaturalist? START HERE. Use of the Avenza Maps application is optional.
