Monthly Program & Election: Altadena Native Bloom, Community pride and rebirth after the Altadena Fire

In Altadena the Eaton fire destroyed homes, lives and a beloved community family. But Altadena residents are strong and resourceful. Hear from Altadena Native Bloom volunteers on making Altadena private lots a poppy paradise while awaiting rebuilding. Back in the 1900’s Altadena was celebrated for its California Native Poppy displays!

Join Ty Garrison, John Chan, and Richard Minnich to learn about the Altadena Native Bloom project, which plans to distribute native California annual wildflower seeds to homeowners burned off their property by the fire. The resulting wildflower fields will symbolize the rebirth and resilience of this fabled community, and harken back to the time when Altadena was known for its wildflower fields (there is even a Poppyfields Drive in Altadena).

Note: there will be an election held for the new CNPS Chapter Board during this meeting.

Ty Garrison is a biologist and owner of Biological Assessment Services in Altadena CA. A company performing environmental assessments in the greater Los Angeles area for 45 years. He is also the chairman of the Los Angeles County Significant Ecological Areas Technical Advisory Committee and has taught Environmental Law, Policy, and Regulation.

John Chan AIA, LEED AP is an architect and founder of Formation Association, an award winning Design firm working locally and nationally. As Design Director he works with a variety of creative clients on residential, commercial and cultural projects.

Rich Minnich Ph.D. Professor of and author of California’s Fading Wildflowers; Lost Legacy and Biological Invasions. In addition to being a Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of California, Riverside. He is author of The Biogeography of Fire in the San Bernadino Mountains of California: A Historical Survey and Land of Chamise and Pines: Historical Descriptions of Northern Baja California (both from UC Press) as well as numerous scientific publications.
