Thanks to incredible efforts made by our local CNPS chapter, invasive species like European dune grass (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ammophila<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> sp.) have been almost completely removed from parts of Sunset State Beach. These dunes act as nesting sites for the endangered Snowy Plover from March through late October, making this a prime time to visit (a time when we don&#8217;t disturb them!). On the foredunes, you can expect to see plants including seaside woolly sunflower (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Eriophyllum staechadifolium<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">)<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">coastal sand verbena (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Abronia latifolia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">)<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">pink sand verbena (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Abronia umbellata<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">)<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and Monterey paintbrush (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Castilleja latifolia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">)<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in bloom. Closer to the marshy area, we can find hemp dogbane (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Apocynum cannabinum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) (one of the only occurrences of this species in SC County!) and spot the bright yellow blooms of bur-marigold (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bidens laevis<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) from afar!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This hike is short and sweet. A roughly <\/span><b>1-mile round trip<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">; it should take <\/span><b>around 2 hours <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(botanist pace!). We will be hiking through an unmaintained trail, going up and down unstable sands. We plan to hike from <\/span><b>3:30 pm to 5:30 pm.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This hike is an opportunity to see some yellow fall blooms (+ other awesome plants), a beautiful sunset, and chat with planty people!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There will be opportunities to <\/span><b>carpool<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with state park pass holders, which is highly recommended<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to avoid having to pay for parking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Directions:\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We will be meeting at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/GZ7Pe6956c3RnH7cA\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">south end of the main parking area at Sunset State Beach<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Note that admission to the park is $10, or free with State Parks pass.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Carpool:\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There will be a carpool meeting at 3:00 at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/Kw1Si9mRWDBubJRF7\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Resurrection Church Park and Ride<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Please indicate you want to carpool on the registration form and bring a State Parks pass if you have one!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Bring<\/b><b>:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bring: water, lunch (or snacks), sunscreen, a hat, hiking poles if desired to navigate unstable ground and possibly rain gear depending on weather conditions, and a smile!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>***Space is limited***<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Heavy rain cancels.
