They are mostly rounded woody shrubs of various heights.\u00a0 Grey foliaged ones generally have fuzzy surfaces and the green ones are smooth.\u00a0 One thing they have in common is tiny flowers arranged in round clusters. Usually white-flowered, it also occurs in a pink form that is ornamental. <em>E. parvifolium\u00a0<\/em>is a knee-high to waist-high dense green shrub that grows in the coastal dunes of southern Monterey Bay.<\/p>\n<p><em>E. fasciculatum<\/em> (California buckwheat) is an interior form from farther inland. Buckwheats are attractive to bees, who make a dark, rich honey from the nectar.<\/p>\n<p>The rare naked-stemmed buckwheat <em>(E. nudum decurrens)<\/em>\u00a0of the Sandhills is a spindly knee-high thing.\u00a0 It makes up for its lack of leaves on the nude stems because the petioles of the leaves are decurrent (extending down the stem) and perform the photosynthetic function of leaves.<\/p>\n<p><em>Eriogonum arborescens<\/em>, Santa Cruz Island buckwheat, is a medium shrub with greyish foliage that is naturalized at Seacliff and Manresa State Beaches.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2388\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2388\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2388\" src=\"https:\/\/chapters.cnps.org\/santacruz\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2026\/08\/Eriogonum_giganteumElatifolium-300x221.png\" alt=\"St. Catherine\u2019s Lace (Eriogonum giganteum) with the rose-colored form of E. latifolium\" width=\"300\" height=\"221\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chapters.cnps.org\/santacruz\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2026\/08\/Eriogonum_giganteumElatifolium-300x221.png 300w, https:\/\/chapters.cnps.org\/santacruz\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2026\/08\/Eriogonum_giganteumElatifolium-768x565.png 768w, https:\/\/chapters.cnps.org\/santacruz\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2026\/08\/Eriogonum_giganteumElatifolium-640x471.png 640w, https:\/\/chapters.cnps.org\/santacruz\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2026\/08\/Eriogonum_giganteumElatifolium.png 975w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2388\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">St. Catherine\u2019s Lace (<em>Eriogonum giganteum<\/em>) with the rose-colored form of<em> E. latifolium.<\/em> Photo: www.greatgardenplants.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Though not a local native, St. Catherine\u2019s Lace\u00a0<em>(E. giganteum)<\/em> from the Channel Islands is an attractive large shrub with big flat clusters of white flowers that age to a rust color. Florists use them in dry flower arrangements. The U.C. Davis Arboretum considers it a good wildlife plant; besides honey bees, it supports native bees, birds and small mammals, and hosts a likely total of 12 species of butterfly and moths.<\/p>\n<p>For the warm half of the year, there is always at least one kind of buckwheat in bloom.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Species of buckwheat (Eriogonum) have flowers mainly in whites and pinks.
