Trip description:

Dan Antonaccio provided a fieldtrip to botanize Lake Ranch Reservoir in Sanborn County Park (Santa Clara). Walk along John Nicholas trail through a mixed Douglas fir – California bay forest to the reservoir, created in 1874 and still providing water to San Jose today. Many locally rare and unusual aquatic and semi-aquatic plants thrive along the reservoir’s shoreline late into the summer, including redroot flatsedge (Cyperus erythrorhizos), yellowseed false pimpernel (Lindernia dubia), bog yellowcress (Rorippa palustris), mosquito fern (Azolla sp.), western marsh cudweed (Gnaphalium palustre), and several species of Alismataceae.

Distance: 4 miles,  elevation gain: ~200ft
