DESCRIPTION

Join us for a captivating nature walk in Upper Newport Bay in Orange County. Sea & Sage Audubon Society, in collaboration with the California Native Plant Society Orange County Chapter, invite you to come along. Whether you’re an avid birder or a budding botanist, this outing offers a unique opportunity to deepen your understanding of the interplay between birds and plants in our local coastal ecosystem. Don’t miss your chance to immerse yourself in the beauty of Newport Beach’s natural world. Free and open to all.

This hike will be led by professional biologists Sandy Leatherman (botanist) and Brian Leatherman (wildlife biologist). Sandy and Brian have been professional biologists in Orange County for 30 years. Sandy has vegetation mapped over 2,000 acres of coastal salt marsh and conducted monitoring on Salt Marsh bird’s beak for 5 years. She is currently working with Fred Roberts on the updated OC checklist and continues to do rare plant surveys on all burn areas and OC/IRC preserves with Fred. Sandy has been a member of the OC CNPS since 1993 and serves on the OC Rare Plant Committee. She is also on the Southern California Botanists Board (workshop committee and merchandise committee).

LOGISTICS

  1. Meet at 8 am in the Big Canyon parking lot in Newport Beach.
  2. This is easily reached from Jamboree. Take San Joaquin Hills Rd. west toward the bay where it intersects with Back Bay Dr. (that shares the road with the Mountains to the Sea Trail and Bikeway.) Turn right and follow it for about half a mile to the Big Canyon parking lot. Click here for a Google Map.
  3. After a brief introduction we will start our walk shortly after 8 am.
