Time for a Fall Lawn Replacement\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you are considering replacing your thirsty lawn with <\/span>a drought tolerant ground cover, fall is a good time to do it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Here are two options using native plants:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1) Lippia nodiflora (Phyla nodiflora)is a low growing evergreen that sprawls to\u00a0 form a mat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It is drought tolerant and low maintenance. Small round flower heads will\u00a0 attract native pollinators and add a bit of color. This plant is so hardy you\u00a0 can take cuttings and put them in the ground with a little water and they will\u00a0 soon take off.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It is a fast grower with dense growth to about 3\u201d much like a lawn, but it\u00a0 doesn\u2019t need mowing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another asset, you can walk on it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2) Salvia gracias or creeping sage is a ground cover sage is an evergreen plant\u00a0 with a creeping habit that stays low to the ground, about 6\u201d and adds a\u00a0 pleasant smell to the landscape.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Its leaves are grayish, adding a color contrast to most landscapes. It requires no\u00a0 fertilizer or chemicals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It produces bluish flowers on short spikes that attract pollinators. This plant is\u00a0 hardy, being drought tolerant and low maintenance. It prefers a sunny exposure.\u00a0 It is not as suitable for walking on as it develops woody stems over time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It would be a good choice around rock beds as well. It blooms in May.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
