Join us to learn about native plants in the San Luis National Wildlife Refuge and the wildlife they support!
San Luis National Wildlife Refuge encompasses over 26,800 acres of wetlands, riparian woodlands, native grasslands, and vernal pools. Located in California’s San Joaquin Valley, the refuge is a major wintering ground and migratory stopover point for large concentrations of waterfowl, shorebirds, and other waterbirds.
https://www.fws.gov/refuge/san-luis
The refuge was established in 1967 under the Migratory Bird Conservation Act. The first refuge parcel was purchased with federal Duck Stamp funds to serve as an inviolate sanctuary for migratory waterfowl. The refuge has grown over the last 5 decades and today it is comprised of six contiguous units: San Luis, East Bear Creek, West Bear Creek, Freitas, Blue Goose, and Kesterson. The Refuge is a major wintering ground and migratory stopover point for large concentrations of waterfowl, shorebirds, and other waterbirds. A thriving population of the endemic tule elk is showcased by one of three auto tour routes.

Arranging California native plants in bouquets,
garlands and wreaths for the holidays!
Monday, November 13, 2023 7:00pm – 8:30pm via Zoom
Free and open to all
Speaker: Cynthia Gingerich
Join us to learn more about arranging California native plants in bouquets,
garlands and wreaths for the holidays! This is a continuation of the talk last year where Cynthia focused on bouquets. This talk will
primarily focus on creating garlands and wreaths. Last year’s presentation is in our YouTube channel @NSJV_CNPS [https://www.youtube.com/@NSJV_CNPS]
When Cynthia Gingerich and her family moved from the South Bay to the Santa Cruz Mountains fifteen years ago,
she inherited a yard stocked with native perennials, trees and shrubs from the previous homeowners. After attending her first native plant garden tour to learn more, she took another decade to remove non-native plants and increase the habitat value. Now that her yard is planted exclusively with California natives—just a few non-native bulbs and inevitable weeds remain—she is quick to point out that while she loves growing and arranging California natives, she is still a native plants enthusiast, not an expert.
In 2019 Cynthia visited private and public gardens that featured California native plants in 3 countries and 5 US states; some highlights were wildflower meadows at North Table Mountain Ecological Reserve in April, ceanothus and penstemon in Canada in May, and Matilija poppies in England in July. During that year she also began foraging in her own native garden for flowers, foliage, branches and seed pods to create a variety of natives-only arrangements which were displayed both indoors and out.
Some of those bouquets illustrated an article in CNPS’s Flora magazine (https://www.cnps.org/flora-magazine/garden-q-a-floral-arrangements-17994) and she’s continued to create arrangements in all seasons and sizes throughout the years
since then. More photos are at the Facebook Group for California Native Plant Society.
When Cynthia’s native garden was accepted for the 2022 Growing Natives Garden Tour, it had to be viewed online only due to lack of parking space and accessibility, so she created 3
videos about growing and arranging native plants in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
Our Speaker: Cynthia Gingerich is an avid native plant photographer and gardener and a
member of CNPS chapters for Santa Cruz County and Santa Clara Valley.
