Field Trip March 1st: Exploring Flora for Cultivation and Medicine

Join us for this unique field trip where you will explore and learn to identify plants for healing with botanist and naturalist Christina Sanchez, March 1, 2025, 10 am to 1 pm.

Learn medicinal uses of species which include:

• Creosote Bush: Larrea tridentata

• White Sage: Salvia apiana

• Muller’s Oak: Quercus cornelius-mulleri

• Mojave Desert California Buckwheat: Eriogonum fasciculatum var. polifolium

• Parry’s Jujube: Ziziphus parryi 

This gentle meandering hike in a rarely visited canyon located only via private access is a special treat and is presented free by the Mojave Desert Chapter of CNPS.  This hike is limited to 15 participants. There will be plenty of resting points along the way, with a 1/2 hour break to eat your packed lunch.

Note: We will share the exact location and logistical details upon receiving your RSVP.

Cell reception can be spotty.

Suggested weather-appropriate clothing includes layers, windbreakers (rain jackets work great as windbreakers), a beanie, gloves, and a jacket. Wear close-toed hiking shoes. Trekking poles and gaiters are optional.

What to Pack: Bring water, snacks, lunch, sunscreen, and a hat. Bring a cup if you would like to try a medicinal tea made by Christina. Be prepared for potentially cold and windy conditions, and we look forward to exploring with you!

About Your Guide: Christina Sanchez, based in the Morongo Basin, is a desert local raised in Eastern Coachella Valley. Christina is a botanist, environmental activist, UC Climate Steward, UC California Naturalist, and bio-regional clinical herbalist whose work includes many conservation efforts in the desert.
