Plant Walk – Furlong Gulch to Duncan’s Landing

Meet at the north end of Carvelaro Way, off Highway 1 (north of Wright’s Beach). We will hike about 4 miles up and back, with some rocky and sandy areas; trekking poles can be useful.

Carpool option: meet at 9:00  am at Macy’s east parking lot, Coddingtown Mall, Santa Rosa.

Join Michelle Karle and Lynn Houser as we explore coastal bluffs and dunes in Bodega Bay near Wright’s Beach.

After parking at the North end of Carvelaro Way, we will walk north to Furlong Gulch, where we can see a variety of wetland coastal bluff plants, including sweet coltsfoot, ferns, and seep monkeyflower.

After exploring Furlong Gulch, we’ll walk south along the Kortum Trail to see some interesting plants around Wright’s Beach such as silky beach pea, Ambrosia,  Artemisia, and Atriplex: a plethora of silver, hairy plants. We will then continue to Duncan’s Landing for lunch with a beautiful view. After lunch, we will head back north to Carvelaro Way, enjoying views of the waves and rocky shoreline and plants such as the chamisso coast lupine, coast buckwheat, and false goldenaster (pictured).

Bring a lunch and water, a hat and sun protection, and wear boots or shoes suitable for a little rock scrambling. A restroom is available at Wright’s Beach, on our way to Duncan’s Landing.
