June 17 Speaker Series: Liz Parsons Shares her Expertise

Our June speaker will be our current President, Liz Parsons. Liz is an avid gardener with a special interest in California native plants. She will share her experiences with the CA native plantS that do well in Sonoma County. She received her education in horticulture at the Santa Rosa Junior College. She has been very active in the Milo Baker Chapter of the California Native Plant Society for over 50 years, which she joined in 1975. She was the coordinator of our plant sale for over 30 years. As one of her many contributions as president, she writes the monthly horticulture article for the Milo Baker newsletter.

In 2005, she was given the honor of becoming a Fellow in the California Native Plant Society in recognition of her service. These members are recognized for their extraordinary accomplishments towards the understanding, appreciation, and preservation of California native plants. She cultivated her Kenwood garden for over 30 years. In 2022 she moved to Oakmont, where she has a much smaller garden to care for. In four years she has transformed the garden into a native habitat. There is a heritage Coast Live Oak (Quercus agrifolia) in the front yard of her new home.

Liz was born in Illinois and at age 28 she moved to California where the difference in the plants was so striking, that she began to study the flora of her new home and how to grow the plants that she studied. This has been her passion ever since. Liz also enjoys gardening with all sorts of plants, but is particularly interested in the drought tolerant plants from the areas of the world with a Mediterranean climate.

Milo Baker Chapter General Meetings and Speaker Series are held on the third Tuesday of each month (except for July, August, and December) at 7:30p.m. Meetings are held at the Luther Burbank Art and Garden Center, 2050 Yulupa Ave, Santa Rosa, or via Zoom.
