City Nature Challenge

Please help us with Ventura County’s inaugural year as participants in the City Nature Challenge. Started in 2016 as a competition between Los Angeles and San Francisco, the City Nature Challenge (CNC) has grown into an international event, motivating people around the world to find and document wildlife in their own cities. Run by the Community Science teams at the California Academy of Sciences and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHM), the CNC is an annual four-day global bioblitz at the end of April, where cities are in a collaboration-meets-friendly-competition to see what can be accomplished when we all work toward a common goal.

Here in Ventura County we will be out in the field helping others document their nature-related observations using iNaturalist. Santa Barbara County will also be participating.
If you’re not familiar with iNaturalist there is a how-to guide here. It’s as simple as adding the app to your phone and taking photos. The photos (with location turned on) will automatically be added to our collection. Easy peasy! If you can’t make it to one of the locations listed below feel free to strike out on your own and bring your friends! Just remember, no photos of humans, pets, or garden plants!
