FIELD TRIP: PCT South from Ebbetts Pass (Day 1 of Double Header)

Hiking Difficulty: Moderate, altitude

Brief Description:  We will explore the southbound Pacific Crest Trail from where it crosses Highway 4 at Ebbetts Pass. The trailhead is at 8,732 feet and the highest point of the hike is 8,860. This will be an out-and-back walk over varied terrain in the first mile or two of the trail, mostly downhill, crossing forest and small meadows, volcanic mudflows, and runoff channels with plenty of wildflowers. This is a sometimes narrow and rocky trail with creek crossings. It’s uphill on the way back, so we’ll go slow and save our breath. The distance will depend on the group’s preference, but no more than 4 miles total.

Meeting place and time: We will meet at 9 a.m. in the parking area 0.4 miles east of Ebbetts Pass on the south side of Highway 4, signed for the Pacific Crest Trail.

Well-behaved dogs on leash are allowed in the National Forest. Dogs must stay on the trail and must not be allowed to disturb wildlife.
