FIELD TRIP: Lava Bluffs Trail at Calaveras Big Trees SP

This 2.5 mile loop has the best spring wildflower displays at Calaveras Big Trees. The trail takes you through diverse forest environments, a volcanic formation, and along a historic water ditch. Scheduled for a weekday since this park gets very crowded on weekends. You might want to consider camping the night prior to the field trip. Big Trees has car campgrounds and a few walk-in sites but you have to reserve early. The entrance fee is $10 per vehicle for day use ($9 for seniors).

Hiking Level: Moderately difficult with some steep sections; trail ranges between 3,700 and 4,200 feet.
