The 2023 SO BE FREE was held at theĀ Sagehen Creek Field Station, located on the east side of the northern Sierra Nevada, just north of Truckee. Sagehen Creek Field Station is embedded within a 9,000-acre experimental forest within the Tahoe National Forest. The field station and vicinity allowed opportunities to explore the bryoflora of the varied habitats to be found in the high Sierra. Habitats visited included fens, subalpine forest, sagebrush, streams, lakeshores, and meadows. There was a well-attended beginners session on the first day, and field trips near and far. Evenings included student talks, convivial microscopy sessions, and the annual Chapter meeting. Nearly 60 participants enjoyed a rich, wonderful experience.
